PROJECT:

REFUGEE INTIATIVE

The Refugee Initiative is held in conjunction with Canberra's local Refugee Centre (Migrant Resource Centre).

We understand that refugees and newly arrived migrants in Australia face many issues in settling in Australia, such as health, education and employment. One issue is also IT literacy. IT skills are something that we all take for granted, and the use computers and internet plays a central role in today's day to day functioning. Without knowledge of IT and internet, many refugees will find life difficult. They will face difficulties in communicating with loved ones, in searching for employment, in preparing resumes and documents for jobs and more generally searching information on the internet. It is a fact and reality that many refugees and migrants simply have not been exposed to computers or the internet, and that this is a barrier that they face.

Peter Sturgess of ANU and EnSIGN recognised this issue, and decided to take action. Two years ago, Peter initiated an IT literacy program in conjunction with the Migrant Resource Centre.

It has been a great success. EnSIGN volunteers spend 2-3 hours per week over a 10 week period with a student from the Migrant Resource Centre. The students receive training in how to use computers, word processing, internet, job searching and CV preparation.
